Physical AI Port Innovation to Begin with Gwangyang Port
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that it would be holding a groundbreaking ceremony for the Port Automation Testbed construction project at Gwangyang Port on Thursday, July 30 at 11:00 AM. Approximately 150 people including Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Hwang Jong-woo, Administrative Vice Mayor Hwang Ki-yeon of Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City, and President Choi Kwan-ho of Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority, along with officials from the port technology industry and the port and logistics sectors, are expected to attend the groundbreaking ceremony.
The project involves investing a total of KRW 772.4 billion by 2029 to construct a fully automated container port comprising domestically produced cargo handling equipment, container transport equipment, and port operating systems. The project aims to create conditions for the stable introduction of automated ports in Korea and to enhance industry competitiveness by creating a domestic market for related port technologies such as equipment and systems.

MOF announced its Physical AI Port Strategy on July 23, outlining plans to establish the Port Automation Testbed as a frontrunner for the proactive introduction and demonstration of physical AI technologies. Accordingly, the Port Automation Testbed will be developed into a next-generation smart port that goes beyond simple automation and incorporates AI technologies*.
* Plans to introduce AI technologies such as agentic AI for yard operation optimization and AI-based real-time analysis of cracks and subsidence in automated guided vehicle (AGV) travel routes
Meanwhile, HD Hyundai Samho, which will participate in the manufacturing of quay cranes for this project, leveraged its track record from this initiative to sign a contract on July 26 with Washington United Terminals (WUT)—which operates the Port of Tacoma in the US—to supply four port cranes; thus marking a successful foray into the overseas market.
“The Gwangyang Port Automation Testbed will serve as a cutting-edge port that enhances Korea's export-import logistics competitiveness while also supporting the strengthening of port technology capabilities and overseas market expansion through the use of domestically produced equipment and systems. It will be a key hub leading Korea's physical AI port innovation. We will actively support the innovations initiated at Gwangyang Port so that they can translate into overall improvements in our ports' competitiveness and growth in the port technology industry,” Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Hwang Jong-woo said.
