Successful Rescue of Injured Dolphin ‘Anmogi’
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that it successfully rescued an injured dolphin named ‘Anmogi’ on Wednesday, July 15 at Gangneung Port (formerly Anmok Port) in Gangneung-si, Gangwon Province and safely transported it to a specialized marine animal rescue and treatment center, where it is currently receiving care.
Anmogi is an Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin that had been inhabiting the Gangneung Port area alone since last year. Recently, a laceration approximately 20 cm in diameter was discovered on its lower back. Moreover, the dolphin was observed to be approaching vessels repeatedly and rubbing its body against the vessel propellers, indicating lowered wariness of humans. MOF determined that Anmogi was at high risk of death in the near future and—following expert consultations—decided to conduct an emergency rescue.
The rescue operation involved MOF, National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea, National Institute of Fisheries Science, Cetacean Research Institute, Gangneung City, Gyeongpo Marine Rescue Special Volunteer Fire Brigade, and nine rescue and treatment institutions* with assistance from the Gangneung Coast Guard, Gangneung Marina, and Gangneung, Samcheok, Uljin, Yeongdeok, and Ulsan Nambu Police Stations. The rescue team guided Anmogi into a controlled zone within Gangneung Port, successfully captured it, and then used specialized transport equipment to move it safely to a dedicated treatment tank prepared separately.

Anmogi is currently in stable condition and is scheduled to undergo thorough diagnostic examinations and intensive treatment. Following treatment, the dolphin is expected to be released back into the wild once fully recovered, after consultations with domestic and international experts.
"This rescue is a meaningful case that enhanced the chances of survival of a precious marine animal through close cooperation not only with the relevant agencies and experts but also with various civic groups and the citizens of Gangneung. We will do our best in treatment so that Anmogi can regain its health and return to the ocean where it can swim freely," said Seo Jeong-ho, Deputy Minister of Marine Policy at MOF.
