From Dispatching a Special Envoy for Mackerel to Offering Discounts on all Seafood... Government Takes Direct Action to Stabilize Mackerel Prices
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that it is implementing comprehensive seafood price stabilization measures to respond actively to recent price increases of major seafood items such as mackerel and to ease the burden on household shopping baskets.
First, a Mackerel Special Envoy Team will be dispatched to major mackerel-producing countries such as Norway from July 6 to 17. Consisting of officials from MOF, Korea Maritime Institute, National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives, and importers, the Special Envoy Team will meet directly with local governments and producers/exporters to verify mackerel supply capacities. It also plans to identify new supply sources—including the UK and the Faroe Islands—to improve the current import structure, which is overly concentrated in specific countries.
Through these efforts, the government plans to secure approximately 2,000 tons of Norwegian mackerel and supply it to the domestic market at low prices and to purchase directly domestic mackerel, hairtail, and squid—whose prices have recently risen—to supply them to the market at discounted prices immediately.
This measure goes beyond simply securing import volumes; it is a proactive price-stabilizing action wherein the government directly visits overseas production countries to secure supply and then links with domestic distributors to lower consumer prices.
MOF will continue to monitor sales prices and consumption trends for major fish species such as mackerel, hairtail, and squid by meeting with major retailers, including hypermarkets. It also intends to request active cooperation from the retailer and maintain ongoing communication to ensure that government-secured supply and discount support result in actual reductions in consumer prices.
In addition, MOF will hold a seafood discount event at 24 offline stores nationwide—including supermarkets—for 3 weeks from July 8 to July 28. This is the first time that discounts have been offered on all seafood items since the program began in 2020. During the event, consumers can purchase domestic seafood at up to 50% off. "To respond proactively to the rise in mackerel prices, the government plans to dispatch a Special Envoy Team directly to secure additional suppliers and identify new import routes. We will ensure that the secured supply is rapidly available in the domestic market, and that it will lead to actual consumer price reductions," said Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Hwang Jong-woo.
According to the Minister, seafood prices are a livelihood issue directly connected to the daily lives of Korean people. “The government will oversee directly from overseas production sites to domestic distribution channels, mobilizing all available policy tools including imports, direct purchases, stockpiling, and discounts, to ease the burden on household shopping baskets," he added.
