“An Unceasing Voyage, the Vanguard of Korea’s Economy”
Commemoration Ceremony for the 3rd Seafarers’ Day to Be Held
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that it will hold the 3rd Seafarers’ Day Commemoration Ceremony under the theme, “An Unceasing Voyage, the Vanguard of Korea’s Economy,” at the Busan Port International Convention Center in Busan starting at 1:30 p.m. (KST) on June 19 (Fri).
Seafarers’ Day, observed annually on the third Friday of June, was designated as a statutory commemorative day in 2023 to raise public awareness of the importance of seafarers and to enhance their pride and sense of accomplishment. Approximately 400 participants, including Minister Hwang Jong-woo of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, seafarers, and representatives of related organizations, are expected to attend this year’s ceremony.
At the ceremony, Presidential Commendations and Ministerial Commendations of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries will be presented to 14 seafarers who have contributed to the safe operation of vessels and the enhancement of seafarers’ rights and interests.* In particular, Kwon Ki-heung, Chairman of the Seafarers’ Union of H-Line Shipping Co., Ltd., who has contributed to protecting seafarers’ jobs and enhancing the attractiveness of seafaring careers, and Lee Don-hwa, Vice Chairman of the Sokcho Maritime Industry Labor Union, who has worked in the fisheries sector for 30 years and devoted efforts to improving wages and working hours for maritime workers, will receive Presidential Commendations.
*2 Presidential Commendations and 20 Ministerial Commendations (12 to be presented at the ceremony)
In his commemorative address, Minister Hwang Jong-woo of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries will state, “I hope this day serves as an opportunity for the public to recognize the dedication of seafarers who have steadfastly safeguarded the front line of Korea’s economic security despite challenging conditions, including the conflict in the Middle East.” He will add, “The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries will continue to make every effort to improve working conditions and welfare so that seafarers can work with satisfaction and to foster highly qualified seafarers.”
