2026 International Marine Accident Investigation Forum to Be Held - Discussions on the Prevention of Marine Accidents Related to Cargo Securing on Board and Enclosed Spaces on Ships to Be Held on June 18 The Korea Maritime Safety Tribunal (KMST) under the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced that it will hold the 2026 International Marine Accident Investigation Forum in Busan on June 18. Since its inception in 2012, the forum has brought together domestic and international experts, members of the shipping industry, and personnel from related organizations each year to discuss marine accident investigation techniques and measures for accident prevention. Reflecting recent areas of interest in marine accidents and changes in international maritime safety regulations, this year’s forum theme has been selected as “Marine Accident Investigation Cases Related to Cargo Securing on Board and Enclosed Spaces on Ships.” During the first session, marine accident investigators and private-sector experts from the Republic of Korea, Australia, China, and Singapore will discuss the major causes of cargo securing accidents and preventive measures, while also introducing the relevant international regulation, the IMO Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing (CSS Code*). * Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing During the second session, participants will share the recently revised International Maritime Organization (IMO) Recommendations for Entering Enclosed Spaces Aboard Ships (Res. MSC.581(110)) aimed at preventing casualties in enclosed spaces on ships. The session will also examine the major causes of recurring enclosed-space accidents and response measures from the perspective of marine accident investigators. Lee Si-won, President of the Korea Maritime Safety Tribunal, stated, “Preventing marine accidents is a common top priority for all maritime nations,” adding, “I hope that the experiences and insights shared through this international forum will serve as a valuable foundation for further strengthening the safety management systems of our vessels and maritime workplaces.”
