A New Wave of Marine and Fisheries Startups
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) and the Korea Institute of Marine Science and Technology Promotion (KIMST; President Jeon Jae-woo) announced that they would be holding the 2026 Marine and Fisheries Startup Briefing at TP Tower in Yeouido on Wednesday, June 17 to discover promising startups in emerging marine industries and revitalize the startup ecosystem.
This briefing has been organized to support prospective entrepreneurs with innovative technologies and early-stage startups in stably entering the market amid the rapidly changing industrial environment, and to help them successfully establish themselves through investment attraction and effective PR and marketing.
The briefing will be held under the theme "OCEAN STARTUP WAVE – A New Wave in Marine and Fisheries Startups." It will begin by introducing the direction of this year's support for marine and fisheries startups to prospective and early-stage entrepreneurs, followed by expert-led sessions that share core know-how based on hands-on experience in the following areas: ▲ technology commercialization strategy, ▲ investment acquisition strategy, and ▲ marketing strategy for market entry and securing initial customers.
Moreover, MOF plans to introduce business support programs that are currently being promoted for each growth stage—such as startup support, commercialization support, and investment-attraction linkage programs—and to guide participants in identifying the support systems they need in one place.
The event will also feature a Customized One-on-One Startup Consultation Session with participation from accelerators (ACs)*, venture capitals (VCs)**, KIMST, and technical experts from various fields.
* AC (Accelerator): A specialized organization that supports startups in rapidly reaching a growth trajectory by providing facilities, funding, mentoring, investment, and other forms of assistance.
** VC (Venture Capital): A professional investment organization that invests in venture companies with high growth potential in the form of equity and realizes capital gains through exit markets.
The consultation areas will comprise five sectors: the recently prominent fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and AI transformation (AX), eco-friendly and advanced ship technologies, and investment, commercialization, and marketing. Tailored consulting services will be provided based on the specific needs of pre-registered applicants.
" For innovative ideas and technologies in the marine and fisheries sector to develop into successful startups, systematic support from the earliest stages of entrepreneurship is essential. We hope this briefing serves as an opportunity to address the challenges of prospective and early-stage entrepreneurs and to increase their chances of successfully entering the market," said Seo Jeong-ho, Deputy Minister of Maritime Policy at MOF.
