Six Locations Including Ansan in Gyeonggi Province Selected as Excellent Local Governments in the Management of Fishing Village and Fishing Port Regeneration Projects
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that it has selected six local governments for the "2026 Excellent Local Governments in the Management of Fishing Village and Fishing Port Regeneration Projects," with an award ceremony to be held on Tuesday, June 16.
Ansan City in Gyeonggi Province received the Grand Prize, with Samcheok City in Gangwon Province and Muan County in Jeollanam-do receiving the Top Excellence Award and Saha-gu in Busan, Dong-gu in Ulsan, and Haenam-gun in Jeollanam-do each receiving the Excellence Award.
MOF has been conducting evaluations of Excellent Local Governments in Managing Fishing Village and Fishing Port Regeneration Projects to discover and spread outstanding achievements and encourage active project implementation. Visible results have been achieved since the evaluations began including improved execution rates and completion performance, and both project management standards and implementation momentum have been strengthened further.
This year’s evaluation involved 18 local governments nationwide, with 6 outstanding local governments ultimately selected through a comprehensive evaluation of execution performance, facility completion rates, project management capabilities, and cooperation in project implementation.
Grand Prize winner Ansan City of Gyeonggi Province was highly praised for its operation of temporary convenience facilities including multi-purpose containers and temporary restrooms, which were internally funded during the maintenance projects for Seongam Port and Pungdo Port. These measures minimized income gaps for fishermen and inconvenience for visitors. The city also received excellent marks for expediting construction and systematic project management, which enhanced overall project effectiveness.
The winning local governments will receive prize money as follows: KRW 3 million for the Grand Prize, KRW 2 million for the Top Excellence Award, KRW 1 million for the Excellence Award, and Minister of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries Award. Furthermore, they will be granted additional points in the selection of new project sites for the Fishing Village New Deal 3.0 in 2027.
"We will share the best practices identified in this evaluation nationwide to expand the outcomes of the fishing village and fishing port regeneration projects further. We will ensure the successful completion of the 183 regeneration projects currently underway, develop major fishing villages into economic and living hubs, and produce tangible improvements in living conditions that residents can actually feel," said Park Seung-joon, Director of the Fishery and Fishing Port Regeneration Planning Division at MOF.
