Public and Private Sectors Carry out Underwater Cleanup at Homigot Cape in Pohang Hand-in-Hand on the Occasion of Ocean Day
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that it would be carrying out a public-private joint underwater cleanup in the waters around Homigot, Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk Province—a designated marine protected area—in celebration of the 31st Ocean Day week on Thursday, May 28.
Since this cleanup is taking place in a marine protected area, manual collection methods that prioritize environmental values such as protecting the marine ecosystem will be used instead of conventional mechanical methods. As the cleanup site, the waters of Homigot in Pohang is a major habitat for marine protected species such as Asian surfgrass and surfgrass; thus making it an area of very high ecological conservation value.
*(Asian surfgrass) A perennial seagrass resembling rice, inhabiting only the waters of Korea and Japan (Designated in 2007)
**(Surfgrass) An aquatic flowering plant whose flowers resemble shrimp (Designated in 2007)
Fifteen professional divers from the private environmental group Ocean Campus will participate in the cleanup to collect submerged waste directly including abandoned fishing nets, traps, and underwater ropes. Previously, in the first cleanup operation conducted in Nagok-ri, Uljin-gun, Gyeongsangbuk Province last March, 15 professional divers were deployed and collected about 200 kg of discarded fishing gear.
To ensure the safety of underwater workers, MOF plans to deploy experienced divers with at least Advanced certification* and assign one safety supervisor per four divers; with thorough safety management measures in place.
*An intermediate-level qualification obtained after completing basic dive training, allowing for advanced diving involving greater depths and environmental adaptation.
"I hope that this activity taking place at Homigot—the home of marine protected species—in celebration of Ocean Day week will be an opportunity to raise public interest in marine environmental protection. Moving forward, we will continue to manage marine protected areas healthily through active cooperation with the private sector," said Hwang Jun-sung, Director General of Marine Environment Policy at MOF.
