“Come to the fishing village!”
A Vibrant Fishing Village at the Heart of the City
- Holding the 2026 Return to Fishing & Rural Life & Fishing Village Tourism Festival at Gwanghwamun Square from Monday, May 11 to Wednesday, May 13


  The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that it would be holding the 2026 Return to Fishing & Rural Life & Fishing Village Tourism Festival at Gwanghwamun Square for 3 days from Monday, September 11 to Wednesday, May 13.

  Hosted by MOF and organized by the Korea Fisheries Infrastructure Public Agency, the event is planned under the theme “Come to the Fishing Village!” to introduce urban residents to the diverse charm of fishing villages and provide comprehensive information on returning to fishing villages/rural areas and fishing village tourism resources. About 30 related organizations and groups—including fishing and rural settlement centers, local governments, fishing villages, and relevant public institutions nationwide—will participate in the event.

  The event will provide opportunities for urban residents who wish to return to fishing villages to access one-on-one, customized policy consultations and startup support, and to hear firsthand experiences and stories from exemplary individuals who have successfully returned to fishing villages.

  Diverse hands-on programs will also be held for visitors to participate in and enjoy directly. A variety of activities are prepared including Our Village Fishing Village Life—which offers vivid success stories of settling in a fishing village as well as a glimpse into the actual living environment—and A Bite of Seafood Trip, a gourmet experience featuring local specialties.

  In particular, special programs will be held to provide deep rest to citizens who are exhausted from their busy daily lives. The Sea-Gazing Sound Meditation—which earned raves last year—is a session that uses the serene scenery of a fishing village and the sound of ocean waves to help participants experience psychological stability. Meanwhile, the night program Midnight Wave & Sound Reboot will run until 8:00 PM (KST) to provide office workers on their way home with a quiet nighttime seaside retreat in the heart of the city.

  Visitors can also explore a variety of fishing village tourism content including fishing village tourist destinations and experiential leisure village programs highlighting regional characteristics, information on fishing village-style workcations that balance work and relaxation, and excellent fishing village specialty products.

  “I hope that this event will be a meaningful opportunity for urban residents living busy daily lives to discover the warm, heartfelt charm of fishing villages and their potential as a new place to build a life. We will continue to provide unwavering policy support for returning to fishing villages and revitalizing fishing village tourism, so that the public can find hope in fishing villages and help create vibrant fishing communities,” the Minister of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Hwang Jong-woo said.
