“The Sea's Safety Belt, Life Jacket” Content Contest to be Held
- May 18 – June 19, Slogan, poster, and video contest on life jacket use

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that it would be holding a slogan, poster, and video contest together with the Ministry of Interior and Safety from Monday, May 18 to Friday, June 19 to raise awareness of the importance of wearing a life jacket.

Under the Fishing Vessel Safety Operations Act, life jackets must currently be worn when a weather warning is issued or when there are two or fewer people on board a fishing vessel. Due to a law amendment, however, people aboard a fishing vessel who are on exposed decks must wear life jackets regardless of weather alerts starting July 1. Failure to wear a life jacket is subject to a fine of up to KRW 3 million.

Themed "Making Life Jacket Wearing a Part of Daily Life," this contest encourages fishermen to wear life jackets and accepts submissions in three categories: slogans, posters, and videos. A total of 24 entries will be selected as winners through expert evaluation of creativity and originality, and grand prize winners in each category will receive awards from the Minister of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and Minister of the Ministry of Interior and Safety.

Fishermen can submit their application via mobile using the QR code on the contest poster. Further details can be found on the MOF website (www.mof.go.kr) and the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives website (www.suhyup.co.kr).

“Ahead of the mandatory wearing of life jackets this coming July, we have finished distributing inflatable life jackets to all fishing vessel crew members that allow for comfortable movement during fishing operations. Since wearing a life jacket is the most basic safety rule for protecting the lives of fishermen, I ask that they make sure they wear life jackets at fishing sites,” Minister of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries Hwang Jong-woo said.
