A Fresh Start Toward the Future Ocean! Eco-friendly Fisheries Research Vessel Tamgu 2 Sets Off
 - Launching ceremony for the eco-friendly fisheries research vessel Tamgu 2 to be held in Incheon on Tuesday, May 19

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that it would be holding the launching ceremony of the eco-friendly fisheries research vessel Tamgu 2 at Ara Incheon Passenger Terminal on Tuesday, May 19 and commencing full-scale fisheries resource surveys.

  * The vessel will conduct surveys of fish eggs and larvae, scientific fish detection, fisheries resource assessments, and monitoring of fishing grounds and red tides.

Tamgu 2 is 2.7 times larger (239 tons) than the predecessor research vessel (90 tons) that has been in operation since its launch in 1997. It features improved onboard living conditions including more space for researchers, enabling 24-hour operation. The vessel is also equipped with nine types of advanced survey equipment*, including a water column conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) profiler.

  * Advanced equipment such as CTD profiler, trawl monitoring system, scientific fish detector, etc.

Tamgu 2 will use its survey equipment and scientific fish detectors—which are optimized for precise fisheries resource assessments and marine ecosystem monitoring—to collect high-quality research data in the West Sea. It will also be used actively to enhance survey accuracy by detecting and tracking fisheries resources in real time.

Equipped with an eco-friendly hybrid propulsion system (diesel engine + battery), it enables electric propulsion during port entry, exit, and survey operations; this is expected to contribute to achieving carbon neutrality by reducing greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions.

“Tamgu 2 is a fisheries science research vessel equipped with advanced survey equipment and eco-friendly propulsion system, and we expect it to play a significant role in producing precise survey data and strengthening the foundation for related research. Through this, we will scientifically analyze changes in fisheries resources in our seas and contribute to laying the foundation for a sustainable marine fisheries industry,” said Kim In-kyung, Director General of Fisheries Resource Policy at MOF.
