Operation of Ocean Week in Commemoration of the 31st Ocean Day
A Wide Range of Marine Experience Events to be Held Nationwide
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that approximately 140 marine culture and hands-on events across the country over a 12-day period from Wednesday, May 20 to Sunday, May 31 in commemoration of the 31st Ocean Day on May 31, with around 310,000 people expected to participate.
Ocean Day (held on May 31 annually) is a national commemorative day established in 1996 to inform the public of the economic, environmental, historical, and cultural values and significance of Korea’s seas. Symbolizing the raising of the anchor for Busan as a maritime city, this year’s commemorative ceremony will take place on Wednesday, May 27 in Busan.
MOF will host a wide range of events during Ocean Week from May 20 to 31 with about 80 organizations nationwide, so that the public can enjoy the pleasures of the ocean in their daily lives.
A marathon commemorating Ocean Day will take place in downtown Seoul, while experiential events such as beach yoga, sunset Pilates, and marine leisure activities will be held in Busan. Also to be held in Jindo is a unique survival experience wherein participants can make their own life rafts needed in the event of a maritime accident. Meanwhile, cleanup activities will take place along coastal areas nationwide to preserve clean seas. Various events will be organized as well, including a sea-themed children's song contest as well as visiting marine education programs (targeting eight kindergartens and elementary schools) in celebration of Ocean Day. More details about the Ocean Week events can be found on the Marine Education Portal (www.ilovesea.or.kr).
“I hope that during Ocean Week, various marine culture and hands-on events held across the country will provide all citizens with a meaningful opportunity to reflect once again on the value and importance of the sea. We will continue to expand opportunities steadily for more people to get closer to and enjoy the sea in the years ahead,” Minister of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries Hwang Jong-woo said.
