The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that it would be holding the “2026 Aquaculture Farm Rental Business Briefing” in Busan on Tuesday, March 31.
Young people and others seeking to engage in aquaculture in fishing villages have faced difficulties entering the industry due to the initial investment burden, as they must either join a fishing village community to use communal fish farms or take over privately owned fish farms. To address this, the Ministry introduced a fish farm rental system in 2024 for providing support for fish farm rental fees and related fees. Since 2025, the Ministry has also leased and provided fish farms equipped with housing, as well as related equipment and facilities.
This briefing session will hear from operators of leased fish farms and explain the operational plan for the fish farm leasing business in 2026. Moreover, MOF plans to introduce support measures to promote stable settlement in fishing villages and to help start aquaculture businesses after the three-year lease ends. It will also provide education on aquaculture safety management and disease prevention.
“This year, we plan to enhance self-reliance by expanding the pool of potential aquaculture farms available for lease and developing the relevant platform to facilitate the active sharing of lease information. We will continue to provide ongoing support to help young people and others who are participating in the leased aquaculture farm program settle stably in fishing villages,” said Park Seung-jun, Director General of Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy at MOF.
