Minister of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries Hwang Jong-woo inspected the situation regarding the Middle East war in the ministry’s disaster video conference room as his first official engagement after his inauguration ceremony on Wednesday, March 25.
As the Middle East conflict enters its fourth week, there are still 26 Korean ships and 178 Korean seafarers inside the Strait of Hormuz at present.
At the meeting, Minister Hwang received a briefing on the locations of Korean vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, supply of daily necessities, crew changes, and the cooperation system with the relevant agencies.
In particular, he instructed the continued real-time management of the safety of Korean seafarers and vessels near the Strait of Hormuz 24 hours a day and the operation of the real-time communication system in operation between the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and shipping companies without disruption.
He also encouraged shipping companies to stockpile essential supplies—such as food—on each vessel in preparation for an emergency and urged them to maintain real-time communication with the relevant ministries including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In the shipping sector, too, he instructed the Import/Export Logistics Emergency Response Team to monitor closely the current logistics situation and devise effective support measures to ensure the stability of maritime logistics.
“Please respond with utmost vigilance, prioritizing the safety of our seafarers and vessels. I will also closely examine support measures for struggling shipping companies due to the Middle East conflict,” Minister Hwang vowed.
