The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Acting Minister Kim Sungbum) announced that it held a meeting chaired by the Vice Minister of Oceans and Fisheries on Wednesday, March 18 to inspect import and export logistics following the situation in the Middle East.
The meeting was held as part of the activities of the Import-Export Logistics Emergency Response Team that has been in operation since March 11. It brought together the relevant government ministries including MOF, Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, Ministry of SMEs and Startups, and Ministry of Interior and Safety as well as public and private organizations such as Korea Ocean Business Corporation (KOBC), Korea Shipowners' Association, Korea International Trade Association, Korea SMEs and Startups Agency, and Korea Maritime Institute to establish a government-wide response plan to address the situation in the Middle East. In particular, a cooperation system with local governments was established starting with this meeting through the Ministry of Interior and Safety's new participation, enabling the immediate sharing of opinions from each local government's emergency response team.
The meeting discussed in depth the trends in maritime logistics resulting from developments in the Middle East and their impact on Korea’s import and export logistics. Especially, it listened to the difficulties and cargo demands faced by import and export companies and shared the operational plans of domestic shipping companies and status of alternative route development. The attendants also reviewed the status of each ministry's response and held intensive discussions on effective additional support measures for companies experiencing logistics disruptions.
"As logistics uncertainty persists due to escalating tensions in the Middle East, the government and related agencies must unite in a common purpose to respond. We will solidify our cooperation system to ensure that immediate support is provided without overlooking even the smallest difficulties in the field," Vice Minister of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries Kim Sungbum emphasized.
