The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that it would be holding the 2026 Professional Training Workshop on the International Standards for Maritime Safety Digitalization in Busan on Wednesday, April 29 to seek direction for maritime safety through digital transformation and AI technology.
Digitalization in the maritime sector is accelerating, with the importance of AI technology rising globally. Accordingly, this training workshop was planned to analyze international trends in digital standardization and to develop next-generation maritime safety strategies incorporating AI.
The training workshop will be attended by a large number of experts from the industry, academe, and research institutes, including the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency, Korea Institute of Marine Science and Technology Promotion, Korea Maritime Institute, Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering, Mokpo National Maritime University, Korean Register, Korea Maritime Cooperation Center, and domestic maritime digital equipment and technology companies.
The main discussion topics will include: ▲ Advancement of AI-based intelligent maritime traffic information systems, ▲ AI-powered navigation support services for maritime safety, ▲ Strategies for building and using an integrated AI platform specializing in maritime safety, and ▲ Trends in digital transformation and development of universal marine information standards (S-100, S-200, S-400, etc.) within the international community. In-depth presentations and discussions on advancing maritime safety technologies through artificial intelligence will be held as well.
“The convergence of digitalization and AI technology will dramatically enhance future maritime safety and serve as a key foundation for Korea to emerge as a digital maritime powerhouse. I expect this workshop to lay the groundwork for Korean technology to lead international standards and strengthen further the cooperation system among the industry, academe, and research institutes,” said Han Seung-hyun, Head of MOF’s Advanced Maritime Traffic Management Team.
