Chinese vessel detained for failure to properly manage fishing logbook (catch reduced by 1,486kg)
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (Minister Cho Seung Hwan) announced that it has apprehended a Chinese gillnet vessel* for underreporting its catch in violation of the restrictions in the Korean Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) near Hongdo, Sinan-gun, Jeollanamdo on October 26th (Thursday).

Chinese fishing vessels entering Korean waters are obliged to comply with relevant laws and regulations* as well as any bilateral agreements. Chinese vessels licensed to operate in Korean waters are mandated to update their logbook within two hours of the end of each fishing operation.

The Chinese vessel (gill net) apprehended by the National Fisheries Supervision Vessel (Mugunhwa 23) of the West Sea Fisheries Management Service is suspected of having recorded a 2,050kg-reduced catch in its logbook even though it actually caught about 3,536kg in Korean waters.

The West Sea Fisheries Management Service continues to conduct further investigations at the site of the seizure. Once additional allegations are confirmed, penalties will be imposed in line with relevant laws and regulations, such as the payment of collateral.
