On Thursday, June 18, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries signed an MOU with Hyundai Motor Group and the Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) to build a green hydrogen grid at the Antarctic research station. Attended by Minister Hwang Jong-woo, Sung Kim (President of Strategy Planning at Hyundai Motor Group), and Shin Hyeong-chol (Head of KOPRI), the project aims to overcome solar power limitations during the dark Antarctic winter (March–October). Solar-generated surplus energy will produce and store hydrogen, which will power hydrogen generators during winter. After a year-long customized manufacturing process, trial operations will begin on site with full administrative and technical support from the Ministry and KOPRI.
