The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Chun Jae-soo) announced that it held the 21st Korea-China Maritime Safety Policy Conference with the Maritime Bureau of the Chinese Ministry of Transport on Tuesday, October 21 during the 2025 Korea Maritime Week in Seoul from October 20 to 23.
As two major shipping nations, Korea and China have held annual director-general-level regular meetings since 1999 to seek mutual cooperation measures regarding the safety management of Korea-China international passenger ships and discussions on establishing and revising international standards at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA).
In this meeting, the two countries discussed cooperation measures to secure the △ safety management of Korea-China international passenger ships, △port state control, and △prevention of fires involving electric vehicles during maritime transport and shared directions in the field of technology development, including △autonomous vessels and △maritime digital communications. Moreover, they agreed to expand practical cooperation such as jointly submitting agenda documents when establishing international standards for IMO.
"Korea-China cooperation for ship safety is essential because the two countries are geographically close and there is frequent vessel traffic. We will continue to collaborate with Chinese authorities to support the safe navigation of Korean vessels and assume a leading role in discussions on international standards,” said Choi Sung-yong, Director-General of MOF’s Maritime Safety Bureau.
