Holding the Ceremony for the 7th World Lighthouse Day

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Kang Do-hyung) announced that it would be holding a ceremony to commemorate the 7th World Lighthouse Day at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, July 2 with the theme “Expanding the Value of Lighthouse Culture to Connect Time and Space” in Jeju, where Udo Lighthouse—selected as Lighthouse of the Year by MOF—is located.

World Lighthouse Day was designated at the International Organization for Marine Aids to Navigation (IALA) World Lighthouse Conference held in Incheon in 2018 to raise awareness of the importance and value of lighthouses and draw attention from people worldwide. IALA has selected a host country annually since 2019 to hold an official ceremony, with each member state holding commemorative events.

This year's commemoration ceremony in Korea is expected to be attended by approximately 150 people, including those working in navigational aids as well as the general public. At this ceremony, MOF plans to present ▲smart navigational aids, ▲5-centimeter resolution location information services, and ▲lighthouse preservation and utilization measures and award prizes to those who have contributed to the development of navigational aids.

In addition, side events such as lighthouse photo contest awards ceremony, theme video screening, and commemorative and celebratory performance are expected to attract attention. In particular, a preview video related to the permanent free rental of a large (2.5m wide × 6.5m high) British national treasure beacon as part of the international lighthouse culture exchange project will be released for the first time.

Minister Kang Do-hyung expressed his gratitude to the workers involved in navigational aids for their dedication to the safe navigation of ships. "We will do our best to preserve lighthouses—which embody living history and culture—and promote their value further. Through high-precision positioning services and smartification of navigational aids, we will strive to make the sea safer and more accessible for the public," he vowed.
