MOF to Showcase New Maritime Digital Technologies at IMO Conference
- Joint demonstration of maritime service linkage technology between Australia and Korea at the IMO meeting
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Kang Do-hyung) announced that Korea and Australia would be jointly demonstrating new marine digital technologies at the 12th meeting of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s Subcommittee on Navigation, Communications, and Search and Rescue (NCSR) to be held in London, England on Tuesday, May 13.
The technology introduced at the meeting is a system that provides digital real-time information on various risks that may be encountered by a ship during navigation. It links intelligent ship navigation equipment under development in Korea with Australia's maritime safety information service on the Internet (IP) to enable ships to provide navigation warnings immediately and exchange safe voyage plans with land, wherever in the world the ship is.
The core of this technology is the Maritime Connectivity Platform (MCP)*. Each ship's navigation systems registered in MCP can use maritime information services from various countries. Korea has been developing the platform jointly with Sweden and Denmark since 2016, and it is currently working with several countries including Australia and Finland to implement international standardization.
* MCP: An international platform for sharing global marine digital information
“This demonstration is a meaningful opportunity to inform the international community of the excellence of Korea’s marine digital technology while strengthening our capabilities to lead international standards. We will continue to expand international cooperation in maritime digital technology and lead global standardization to enhance the international competitiveness of Korea’s maritime industry,” Minister Kang Do-hyung said.
