The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Chun Jae-soo) announced that it would be holding the 2025 Korea International Cooperation Conference on Ocean and Fisheries (KICCOF)* with the theme “Strengthening Cooperation for Mutual Prosperity between Korea and Asia” at the Novotel Ambassador Hotel in Seoul on Thursday, October 23 at 2:00 PM. Officials of Asian and international organizations, domestic and international marine and fisheries experts, and officials from foreign embassies in Korea are expected to attend the conference, which is now in its 12th year.
* An event to explore ways of strengthening cooperation in maritime and fisheries with coastal countries in Asia and Africa
In particular, this year’s event is linked with the 2025 Korea Maritime Week (October 20-23) and the BADA Program* to discuss establishing a cooperation channel in the ocean and fisheries sector with Asian countries and identify new convergence cooperation projects.
* BADA (Best Achievement program in oceans and fisheries ODA): As a program for disseminating the achievements of Korea's ocean and fisheries policies, it invites government officials from ODA recipient countries to lectures and field trips and provides recipient countries—in cooperation with the relevant Korean organizations—with customized consulting services in marine science, aquaculture, and marine environment (2022~).
Following last year, MOF plans to announce the Korea-Ocean Economy Initiative* as its vision for international cooperation in the ocean and fisheries sector. The vision will convey the message of inviting the international community to cooperate in and respond to issues such as climate crisis and ecosystem conservation, which are common problems for humanity.
* K-OEI (Korea-Ocean Economy Initiative): A vision for international cooperation in the ocean and fisheries sector, consisting of four major strategies: ① responding to the climate crisis, ② developing sustainable fisheries, ③ conserving the marine environment, and ④ nurturing ocean and fisheries talent
Korea will introduce examples of internal cooperation cases in various fields, such as ▲marine environment conservation and climate change response, ▲sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, ▲conservation and utilization of sustainable ocean and fisheries ecosystems, and ▲training maritime safety personnel and strengthening capabilities. Asian countries participating in the event will also share their national challenges and policy implementation status on topics such as marine economy, climate change, marine pollution, maritime security, and maritime digitalization and discuss ways of cooperating with Korea.
"This conference will be a valuable opportunity for continuously strengthening cooperation in the ocean and fisheries sectors with other coastal and island countries, including those in Asia. We expect the hosting of this conference to enhance Korea's leading role and international standing and lead to meaningful outcomes that contribute to the international community,” said Choi Hyun-ho, Director General for International Cooperation Policy at MOF.
