New Industry Development Leveraged by Strengthened International Regulations

  • Expanding business scale utilizing advantages as the first-mover including developing treatment techniques strengthened by the effectuation of the International Convention for the Control & Management of Ships’ Ballast Water & Sediments (Sep. 2017) and hosting international forums.
  • Leading the market by introducing e-Nav (2019); developing core technology; standardizing techniques for the international market; and establishing international conferences (Jun. 2017).
  • Establishing infrastructure of LNG bunkering in major ports and developing floating LNG bunkering techniques to encourage use of LNG vessels as the regulations of ship emissions will strengthen in 2020.
  • Laying the foundation to develop new foreign market for marine plant services by a project of disassembling old marine plants between Korea and Indonesia; and establishing marine plant industry support center (Sep. 2017).
  • Marina & Cruise Industry Promotion & Marine Tourism Expansion

    • Establishing a policy for marina service promotion (1st half of 2017) in line with deregulation of marina service industry (deregulation of vessel rent business in Jun. 2017); and enhancing support for start-ups including reduction of premiums.
      • Successfully building marina infrastructure including 6 core marina sites.
    • Attracting 2-million cruise tourists in 2017 by establishing large-scale infrastructure of cruise tourism and whole-government marketing.
    • Developing tourist attractions in fishing villages and forming marina network by progressively establishing attactive fishery sites (4), multi-functional fishery sites (10) and marina stations in fishing villages (16).
      • Utilizing cultural elements and sites in fishing villages as tourism resources including designation of haenyeo (female divers) as FAO Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS).
    • Preparing basic plans for marine leisure activity (Dec. 2017) as implementation of Act on Safety & Promotion of Water-related Activities (May, 2017); and promoting registration of 4 sites as sub-aqua tour zone.
    • Selecting all-season marine tracking courses linking 53 coastal promenades with fishing villages & islands; and promoting along with regional festivals.

    Advancement in Oceans & Fisheries by 4th Industrial Technology

  • Developing AI-based sub-aqua building robot for marine development (2013-2018), multi-functional unmanned vessel (2011-2018) and technique of unmanned-vehicle integrated operation system (2015-2020).
    • Promptly transferring into private sectors techniques of Crabsters (Mar. 2017) designed for undersea exploration and of unmanned vessel (1st half of 2017).
  • Supporting private business model development and industrialization using oceans and fisheries information (Korea Hydrographic & Oceanographic Agency and National Fisheries Reserach & Development Institute) by establishing public-private joint platform for bigdata (May-Dec. 2017).
    • Discovering successful examples including prediction of harmful creatures like red tide and AIS-based port dues payment system.
